The Eva Crane Trust aims to advance the understanding of all species of bees and beekeeping by the collection, collation and dissemination of science and research worldwide. This is achieved by providing financial support to academic researchers, citizens scientists, international conferences and the publication of specialist books.

The Trust was formed by Dr Eva Crane in 2002. A well-respected scientist in her own right, Dr Crane had travelled the world to expand her own vast knowledge of bees, beekeeping and bee history and recognised the importance of innovative research and sharing that knowledge. It was her wish to support bee research and to advance the understanding of bees and beekeeping, and thus the Trust was established. (Learn more about Dr Eva Crane)

Dr Crane died in 2007 and bequeathed the residue of her estate to the Trust. Careful management of this inheritance has enabled the Trustees to not only grow the capital sum but to provide over £1.27 million worth of financial support to bee related projects in over 30 countries.

As a result of the Trust’s funding, over 80 projects have been supported in the past 10 years. Bee scientists, citizen scientists, researchers, beekeepers and academics from around the world have benefitted. Books have been published and international conferences sponsored.  Examples of their projects can be found in The Grant Portfolio.

In 2022, the International Bee Research Association (IBRA) donated the Historical Collection to the Trust. Many of the items in the collection had been acquired by Dr Crane from various parts of the world over several decades. Under the supervision of Prof. de Graaf, this important collection has now been made more accessible through our digital catalogue with artefacts being available for exhibiting.

Also donated by IBRA was The Bee Boles Register. Again, records had been collected and collated by Dr Crane and long serving Trustee Penny Walker. This is a unique record of these unusual architectural features found across Britain and Ireland.

There are currently 6 Trustees led by the Chairman Richard Jones and Vice Chairman Prof. Dr. Dirk de Graaf. The Trustees meet four times a year allowing them to stay updated on the Trust's financial performance and make informed decisions about granting funds and shaping its future. Their responsibilities involve not only managing current assets but also strategising for the long-term sustainability and growth of the Trust.
