castle was built in 1432, but abandoned in 1599 and became ruinous; brick structure, built in old fireplace in north gable of roofless Great Hall, has 30 small recesses (intended for pigeons, but not occupied) and 4 larger recesses below; latter were said to be "wintering quarters" for bee skeps; wooden uprights fixed to the brick mullions indicate that doors/boards could have been fitted; probable winter storage, perhaps dating from 1800s or 1900s
