Notes
-
Altitude 670 ft; dimensions given for smaller recess; the larger recess (52x32x13; base 14 in. from ground) may have been a shelter originally, which has been altered: insertion of small recess in side wall and replacement of back; no shelves remain; partly-broken projecting lintels above recesses.
This site was the subject of a newspaper article in 2021: https://www.darlingtonandstocktontimes.co.uk/lookingback/19238681.yes-breaking-bee-bole-news/ The accompanying photograph shows the initials "W.H." on a stone covering the small nook to the right of the recesses. In the article, Dr Michael Waldman suggests that this is the architect William Henry Litton who had the adjoining house rebuilt in 1906.
